Beekeeping Equipment

Beekeeping EquipmentYou will need some equipment to start with a successful beekeeping activity. This must be available before the bees arrive. You cannot get started without investing in the beehive first.

You need to check if your beehive has five supers or not. The supers are important to the beehive because this is the place where the honey will be stored. These five supers should be between the bottom of the hive and the hive cover. Young honeybees will also be breed in the supers, apart from the storage of honey.

During its peak time, each of the super will contain about nine to ten frames. According to your needs, you can choose between a beehive with a shallow super or one with a deep super. Only a single size of foundation will be needed with a deep super.

A buzzing hive with a deep super can go up to a hundred pounds in weight. But you can prevent this by keeping it on a level surface. Take care to confine your beehive in an area where pets and people are not likely to disturb it. A spacer can help you to maintain equal distances between the frames till the time they are within the super.

Now, you will need a smoker. The purpose of the smoker is to drive the bees out, it comes in handy when you want to do some honey harvesting. There is not much to speak about the structure of a smoker. The funnel, the combustion chamber and the bellows are the three parts of the smoker.

For that reason, it is the professional choice as ignition substance in the smoker. Your smoker will work excellently if you use burlap in it because it ignites quite fast and produces profuse amounts of smoke after smoldering. Other beekeepers prefer to use dried corn cobs. Ignite the fire in the chamber.

A device known as the metal hive tool is what you will need next. Your metal hive tool will come in handy when you have to pry the hive open, separate the compartments of the hive and for its cleanliness. This single device is actually quite versatile in its usage for beekeeping. It is quite unwise to get you're live bees before getting your bee brush. The bee brush will help to clear the bees from over the frames when you need to examine them.

When it is time to harvest your honey, you will need a fumer board. This drives the bees out from the super and you can take the honeycomb. eBay can help you get some inexpensive material for beekeeping, but these things will be used. You can get both professional and amateur beekeeping stuff from catalogs and websites.

Frequently Asked Questions!

How much does bee farming equipment cost?

A single new hive may cost around $150, clothing and gear can cost about $160, and a package of new bees can run $125 to $150. Often you will find starter kits with honey bees, boxes, and beekeeping gear for a better combined price.

How many acres does one beehive require?

One single hive will forage an area up to 8000 acres. It depends on the farm area, in an average forest/farm land area you can manage around 20 hives in one place.

How far must a beehive be from my house?

When raising honey bees, it is equally as important to think about how your neighbors use their yard, so it is not a wise idea to put a hive directly on a property line. Instead, place your beehives 10 feet or more from the property line.
